'BIRD SONG'

Sound score comissioned by Siobhan Davies Dance Company.

This clip explores sound and silence and begins extremely quietly. I recomend listening with headphones.

Eight extraordinary performers move through different layers of light, images, music and sound. Revealed at the centre of this complex and entertaining work is the inspiration for Bird Song, the clear call of the Australian Pied Butcher bird.

'The opening of the piece - the 'leading edge', as Davies calls it - uses fragmented sounds, which gradually become more recgnisable and coherent, quietening before the central song. Then the direction is reversed, the sound dispersing back into scattered segments. At first driven by the sound, the dancers grow more individual and purposeful, begining to create musical dynamics rather than follow them, until the currents of music and movement converge at the calm centrepiece. So the overall sweep of the piece sees clusters of sound, light and motion spiralling in towards a pivotal solo, then spining out again towards the 'far edge', like a galaxy with the song of a bird as its gravitational centre.'
